A unique blend of stone brick tiles balances art deco heritage with modern contemporary design

With city, park and bay views all in the one frame, the contemporary new apartment building at 181 Fitzroy Street St Kilda has taken shape. Offering spectacular and unparalleled views across Albert Park Lake, to Port Phillip Bay in the west and St Kilda and the dazzling city skyline to the north, these incredible apartments are more than an impressive addition to Fitzroy Street. This superb architecturally designed building is becoming a memorable and enviable landmark.

Fitzroy Street St Kilda, brick tile facade

Standing 10 storeys high and housing 160 apartments, design was crucial to 181 Fitzroy Street given the art deco architecture of the street and St Kilda generally. SJB Architects aimed to ensure that the streetscape flowed uninhibited, while still providing a modern edge.

The building’s facade boldly combines volcanic and sedimentary stone in a combination of soft grey, flamed grey and brushed grey stone brick facing tiles. Using such a unique blend of tiles is a new concept to Melbourne, pioneered by SJB Architects. Not only does this provide a strong and resilient finish but also creates a gentle and natural building facade that will easily endure the changes in architectural fashion for decades to come.

Nu-Con precast expertly fitted the tiles in to concrete panels at its factory, quickly and efficiently, using Robertson Façade Systems’ brick inlay system, which allowed Nu-Con to readily incorporate return bricks at the corners of the build.

The result is simply stunning. And, not surprisingly, the building sold out because of its fantastic location with never to be built out views.
